The LeGrand Collection
 A Regional Reflection

During his many years of support of the Sioux City Art Center, including service on the board of the Art Center Association of Sioux City, Ritch LeGrand was an avid visitor to the Art Center’s exhibitions. He was also an avid collector, purchasing dozens of works from exhibitions of local and regional artists.

LeGrand has generously offered his collection to the Art Center, so now those artworks are coming back to the Art Center to enter the permanent collection. This exhibition will feature a significant portion of the nearly fifty artworks in the donation. The Art Center will also produce a catalog that documents the complete collection.

Sioux City Art Center Selects

Sioux City Art Center Selects is a regional juried exhibition, open to all artists in Iowa, as well artists living within 300 miles of Sioux City. Unlike traditional juried exhibitions that ask jurors to select individual artworks based on their merits, Sioux City Art Center Selects asked artists to submit a body of work, which were judged by the overall quality of the artworks and by the clarity and consistency of the body of work. The Art Center’s director and curator have selected eight artists, representing Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Each of these artists has presented a cohesive group of artworks for this exhibition. The exhibition, therefore, presents visitors with a better understanding of how artists in our region are thinking and creating right now.

This exhibition has been underwritten by the Persinger Family Foundation.

John Himmelfarb: Trucks
Opening Reception: Satuday, July 16, 5:00-7:00 pm (open to the public)
July 16 – October 23, 2016
John Himmelfarb

Himmelfarb is one of the most respected artists of the Midwest. His work spans virtually all mediums, including painting, drawing, and printmaking, as well as sculptures in metals, ceramics, and found objects. His current and continuing series of works focuses on trucks as a subject. In Himmelfarb’s own words, “These works are not about trucks but about us, our histories, skills, coping mechanisms, ambitions and character.” The Atrium will exhibit a number of his larger sculptures, while the 3rd floor galleries will present smaller sculptures and wall-mounted work. The exhibition will also include one of Himmelfarb’s “life-sized” truck sculptures, such as Penelope Awaiting Her Chamberlain, a 1946 Chevrolet farm truck that has been converted into a mobile sculpture. The show will be complemented by the 124-page book, John Himmelfarb: Trucks: Recent Works, published in 2014.

This exhibition has been sponsored in part by the Martin/Seamster Fund.

Overhead, in V-formation
a flock of white pelicans
 flap black-edged wings
like sailboats bobbing
in a choppy sea.
For 30 million years.
pelicans have flown
heavy and low.
Each lands
like a Pterodactyl
to search for fish.
In a U formation.
sixteen pelicans huddle
in shallow water
near a sand bar.
The moon rises
shining the river silver
and the pelicans white.
Here on the high riverbank,
we build a fire, and
sit in a U formation,
looking out at the river.
Our faces golden,
as we listen to the night.
This exhibition presents collaborative works by two South Dakotans, artist Nancy Losacker and poet Norma C. Wilson. They use their different artistic talents to explore their personal appreciations of the landscape of our region. Losacker creates imaginative glass mosaics and Wilson writes poems that together show how nature’s beauty and diversity can reflect our own experiences.
